News The Papers: Johnson’s plea to MPs after sealing Brexit deal Charles Payne October 17, 2019 0 A beaming Boris Johnson appears on most of Friday’s front pages as the papers look ahead to Saturday’s vote on his… By BBC News Staff Image caption Brexit again dominates the papers’ front pages this Friday. The Times says that after Boris Johnson secured a revised Brexit deal with the EU, he will spend the next 24 hours “frantically trying to sell it to MPs” ahead of a vote on the agreement in the Commons on Saturday. Image caption The Daily Telegraph says the prime minister will give MPs a “my deal or no deal” ultimatum ahead of Saturday’s vote. However, the paper reports that Mr Johnson faces a “plot by a Remain alliance” which – if the deal is approved by MPs – could result in another referendum on whether to accept the deal or to stay in the EU. Image caption The Guardian says EU leaders “are refusing to rule out any further delay to Brexit”. The paper says it all comes down to “a numbers game” – but “the arithmetic looks daunting” for the PM, the paper adds. Image caption “Now seal our deal” is the Metro’s headline beneath a picture of Mr Johnson and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker shaking hands. The paper quotes Mr Johnson, calling for MPs to “get this thing done”. Image caption The Daily Mail also leads on the prime minister’s calls for MPs to back his deal. And the paper is backing his appeal, saying: “He’s done his duty. Now MPs must do theirs.” The strapline contains the paper’s reason for making such a plea, suggesting that “our reckless political class may try to derail” Mr Johnson’s plans during Saturday’s Parliamentary debate. Image caption The Sun’s front page leader echoes Mr Johnson’s comments. It hails the PM’s “miracle” Brexit plan and calls his revised deal “immeasurably better” than the one struck by his predecessor, Theresa May. The paper says the UK is “desperate for Brexit to be sorted” and has urged “dithering MPs” to back Mr Johnson’s deal. Image caption The Daily Express leads on a poll, conducted for the paper, which suggests that 65% of British voters want MPs to back Mr Johnson’s revised deal. “Just do it!” is the front page headline. The paper is one of many to picture a smiling Mr Johnson at the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. Image caption “Now for the tricky part”, the Metro says. The paper says that a “triumphant” Mr Johnson faces a “huge challenge” to win Saturday’s Commons vote – but, it adds, that “senior Tory rebels are preparing to vote with the government”. Image caption A “desperate fight”, “uphill struggle” and a “gamble” is how the Daily Mirror describes Mr Johnson’s bid to get enough MPs to back his revised deal. Labour, the Lib Dems and the DUP plan to reject it, the paper reports. Image caption “A huge political gamble” is how the FT describes the PM’s decision to strike a deal without the backing of the DUP. The paper says that the Northern Ireland party could play a “crucial” role over whether Tory Eurosceptic MPs support the revised deal in Saturday’s vote. Image caption And finally, the Daily Star splashes on a video, posted on social media, that appeared to show Tube passengers removing an Extinction Rebellion activist off the roof of a train during climate change protests in London. “PS. Something vaguely interesting happened regarding Brexit”, the paper adds.
