What are SaaS Security Cameras?

An advantage of a SaaS based security product is accessibility coupled with security updates pushed in real time to the edge device. Today, many companies have legacy NVR/DVR systems where you have access locally, but remote access can be complicated.  Remote access is critical in many environments like retail, banking, and third-party monitoring providers such as your alarm provider. It does not matter if you were traveling the world or just next door your video feed is important. While many companies have security cameras, many of these cameras now may have various security vulnerabilities allowing for holes in the perimeter of the network.

The result is the security vulnerabilities may be lying dormant in the environment undetected by the normal analytics software.  We have seen the increase of ioT devices becoming increasingly compromised evading our privacy and security. The vast amount of security systems such as the NVR/DVR systems may be next to ride this wave. Noting that this is for the older non updated systems not staying current on the security patching. Many companies have reacted to publishing updates after it became mainstream news with a few also being proactive asking their clients to update ahead of the news release.

While do not have to worry about a massive security breach for NVR/DVR systems in general, though it can happen especially if the device is public facing, it is important to note the next wave of security technology is now in view.

The advancements of the VSaaS cameras allow for a single wire to control the camera and provide power. Depending on the job specific requirements you can use cat5e or cat6 cable to accomplish the objective. The different cable specifications allow for different distance lengths while support PoE, or also known as power of ethernet.  This provides the most simplistic cable runs vs running rg59 or rg6 cable with an added splice for power.  Again, this is job specific as there are countless options and variations you can configure for your environment.

Options again vary depending on your retention period for local storage on the security camera coupled with the cloud retention features.  The local storage allows for a failover method in case the camera loses internet but also provides for redundancy in case someone would like to steal or destroy the camera.
