There have been some positive legal changes in the last few years, at least on the surface. For example the country’s penal code explicitly permitted domestic violence, but this was removed in 2016. There used to be a requirement in the country’s personal status law for women to “obey” their husbands, too, but this was revoked in 2019, and other amendments were made to the law to make the language appear more gender neutral. And last March a new law came into effect allowing women access to protection orders – such as restraining orders – for the first time.
